Abstract:The most important work extant of Zhuang Zi's is Xiaoyao You (An Account of a Carefree Journey). (2) The former scholars interpretations on Xiaoyao (calm and master of oneself) in Zhuangzi were of three sorts: a, Xuanxueist "act to each natural instincts" (here the term Xuanxue denoting a learning appeared in the Wei Jin period based on Lao Zhuang philosophy mixing together with Confucian scholarship); b, Buddhist void and Taoist nihility; c, Confucianist " free in comfortable fitness". (3) There will be a disparity in the interpretation of the connotation of Xiaoyao given by the former scholars, and a disparity between these interpretations and the real intention of Xiaoyao which Zhuang Zi gives in his Xiaoyao You. The disparities should have resulted from the unique expression of thought Zhuang Zi presents in his work and the inclusive contradiction between ideality and reality in Zhuang Zi's thought, and, additionally, as the scholars were of different time and of different intuition, they reached different interpretations on Zhang Zi's Xiaoyao to each other were indispendable. (4) A comparative study of the former scholars' interpretations on Zhuang Zi's Xiaoyao will help to understand the development of the ancient Chinese thought.
Keywords:Zhuang Zi  Free and unfettered (calm and master of oneself)  Act to each Natural instincts  Buddhist Void and Taoist Nihility  Free in Comfortable Fitness
