Abstract: | In March 1937 I was living in what used to be Madrid's Palace Hotel, now a hospital. The wounded cried out, there was a smell of carbolic acid everywhere. The building was unheated. There was little food, and as in Moscow in 1920 I often fell asleep dreaming of a piece of meat. |
