齐泽克基于"历史的"与"逻辑的"相统一的原则,对意识形态这一历史性概念做了辩证的分析.他认为,意识形态可以分成三个阶段或者三种形态,即"自在的意识形态"、"自为的意识形态"、"自在自为的意识形态".自在的意识形态是作为观念复合物的存在形式;自为的意识形态是作为仪式等物质形态的存在形式,最后一个阶段则是意识形态自身的否定之否定,即自在自为的意识形态是存在于人类社会的无意识层面的"幻象"存在形式.他试图说明:意识形态的定义就在于我们认为非意识形态的东西恰恰是意识形态本身的悖论性.
