清末民国潮汕新旧教会的妇女事业

在晚清潮汕社会,新教与天主教会是推动妇女教育的先驱。选取美国浸信会、英国长老会和巴黎外方传道会开办的两种妇女教育机构,即所谓的"小女学"和"老妇学",对晚清民国时期在潮汕地区活动的新教和天主教会所开展的妇女事业做一个全面细致的梳理。这些机构为妇女提供了一个受保护的环境,使她们能够排除外界的干扰,在一段或长或短的时间内潜心接受宗教以及文化教育,为潮汕社会培养了一批识字的新女性。

Women's Undertakings of the Old and New Churches in the Chaoshan Region in Late Qing Dynasty

Protestant and Catholic churches took the role as pioneers in promoting educational works for the women living in the Chaoshan region in the late Qing dynasty and the period of the Republic of China.In this paper,the author focuses mainly on two kinds of educational institutes for women that were organized by the American Baptist Church,the English Presbyterian Church and the French Roman Catholic Church,namely,"The Little Girls' School" and "The Old Women's School".These institutes provided the girls and women with a protected environment for a thorough training designed for both conversionist and civilizational purposes,helping to cultivate a group of literate "new women" for the Chaoshan society.
