"One Text and Multiple Theory":An Approach to Teaching Theories in English and American Literature

First,this paper points out the importance of introducing literary theories into the teaching of English and American literature to undergraduate students and then introduces its methodology,suggesting approaching the same literary work from different theoretical perspectives,thus familiarizing the students with the basic concepts of the theories and their applications.To illustrate the methodology,the paper gives a detailed account of analyzing the poem "The Flea" by John Donne from six critical perspectives.On the basis of this,the paper gives a case study of teaching the short story "A Woman on a Roof" by Doris Lessing from perspectives of different literary theories through class discussion and teacher’s guidance.Finally the paper gives an evaluation of teaching literature with theories.
