| Abstract: | In the reign of Emperor Tongzhi (1862 1874) in the Qing Dynasty, the population in the two northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu rapidly decreased by 15 million. This was another sharp decrease of population in the Qing Dynasty after the reign of Xianfeng (1851 1861), quite infrequentlyoccurringin the Chinese history. This paper points out that the sharp decrease of population in northwestern China in late Qing Dynasty mainly resulted from the chaos caused by war and frequent disasters. Some detailed analysis is made in this aspect. |
