Lin Shu's Interpretation of Haggard's Adventure, Ghost and Monster Stories

Rider Haggard's adventure, ghost and monster stories are a greater and more influential part of Lin Shu's translations. As a translator, Lin interfered with the original text by his prefaces and epilogues in the process of his translation. By neglecting individualism in these works and stressing the thief and robber lacking in Chinese tradition, he used these novels which were intended to show the West racial superiority as weapons against the invasion of the imperialists. This was a difficult position in which, after succumbing to the west discourse, he tried to attack imperialism.
