Modern Understanding Mencius'''' Theory of Personality

From the modern perspective, Mencius discusses the theory of personality through three relating topics: characters of the ideal personality, the immanent ground for the cultivation of personality, and ways of cultivation. His theory has modern significances. First, the idea of sage which emphasizes both the unity of reason, emotion and will, and the unity of truth, goodness and beauty, tells that we should cultivate new personality with all-round development. Secondly, the idea of goodness of human nature tells that the construction of personality cannot separate from the actual basis of human nature. Thirdly, the idea of expansion of good human nature tells that establishment of modern personality is the unification of display of self potentiality and self transcendence.
