| Abstract: | Through describing the life of the Burnham family and the Fitts family, American Beauty reflects the vanity of human wishes, the decay of morals and the disillusionment of the pursuit of the original meaning of life in the postmodernist America. The director has employed some postmodernist rhetorical devices to portray the inner feelings of the characters and disclose the cold relationship among them. Though it affirms the pursuit of Lester and the desire of young people for pure love, yet their ending is nightmare instead of realization of dream. This is the true record of tragic life in contemporary America and the faithful representation of everyday life of American middle class. |
