| Abstract: | Although ancient Chinese Phiilologists were never theory- oriented, they sometimes did show strong interest in inquiring the nature of language. This paper attempts to analyze Qing philologists' views on a number of questions, such as l)the relationship between language and writing; 2)origins of language and writing; 3)evolution of language (esp. of sound system); 4)language universals; 5)the relationship between standard language and dialects; 6)diversity of languages and writings; 7)grammar; 8)language and thought; and 9) methodology. |
