A Probe Into The Causes Of Polysemantic Changes Of The English Vocabulary

This paper discusses the extra-linguistic and linguistic causes of polysemantic changes of the English vocabulary with emphasis on the linguistic causes. It holds that the extra-linguistic causes are related to social, historical, psycological and understanding factors, and the linguistic causes are due to factors acting within the language system, namely, the arbitrariness of the noun and the openness of the meaning; the generalization of the noun and the concreteness of the thing ; the similarities between the nouns ; the contact of the conceptual nouns and the meaning shift between them and the interrelations and mutaul control between the words in the semantic field.
