Translation of English Idioms and E.U Nida''s Functional Equivalence

English idioms,with their intensity of color of culture and image,are an important component of the English language,and therefore,play a special role in expression.The translation of English idioms is critical because it determines whether or not the readers of the translation have the same response as the readers of the original.This paper discusses the idiom's particular characteristics and roles,and then analyzes the difficulties in their translation.This paper further discusses the development of translation theory from the argument about the value of using literal translation compared with free translation or functional equivalence,as put forward by E.U Nida.Most importantly,the paper puts forward,on the basis of Nida's functional equivalence approach and reader's response theory,four approaches to the translation of English idioms.
