During the late Qing Dynasty and the Early years of the Republic of China, the intellectual group who came out as cultural conservatives were often overlooked by academic circles.As they were not in the main stream position, despite their unique superiorities in doing scholarly research, they were not regarded as important.Dealing with the respects of Zhang's scholarly research, his knowledge transmitted from his father, teachings succeeded from his masters, and those whom he resorted to for advice, this paper, taking Zhang as a point to penetrate, makes clear the intellectuals of that time of their scholarly tendency and their contradictory mentality between tradition and reality, between neolearning and the quintessence of Chinese culture.
