Abstract: | This paper extends previous approaches to loading job shops by simultaneously considering work in progress, inventory levels as well as work load smoothing. The approach is based on a heuristic and is relatively simple in application to a practical manufacturing system. A further enhancement is proposed using a computer search routine to home in on desirable performance. The search routine sets the values of coefficients in the heuristic and so gives a loading procedure that adapts to a particular manufacturing system. The overall results indicate that the approaches proposed give substantial benefits over previous methods. |
