In 1980s,the ethnic Dong people at Chejiang townshi p of Rongjiang County of Guizhou Province under the guidance of government began to grow watermelons.The surplus people began to emigrate to Guangdong.As a resu lt,the Dong people's conditions of production and living were impro ved,their relations to outer world were enlarged,their traditional ideas were changed,the s trict marriage rules became relaxed,and the clan,as an organization by blood rel ations,was gradually replaced in functions by basic functional organizations.
