19世纪中后期,基督教在华医疗事业的研究就已开始,但是研究主要局限在传教界,研究的目的也是为了传教的需要,学术性不强。20世纪前半期,传教界、医学界从传教史和医学史的角度对教会医疗事业做了研究。20世纪后半期,宗教史、医学史、历史学界学者从不同的角度对教会医疗事业及其影响做了研究,研究的视角和方法也发生了变化。
