Analysis of Goldwater's Conservative Thoughts on American Foreign Policy Strategy

Known as the father of modern U.S. conservative movement, Barry M. Goldwater maintained a "wise self-interest" strategy in American foreign policy. Goldwater's strategy was the consensus of the conservatives before Reagan. Being too idealistic, it had never exerted a decisive influence on American foreign policy making. But the analysis of the strategy can help us to discover why the Democratic and Republican Parties became more and more divergent on the anti-Soviet anti-communist issue during the Cold War era and make further investigation on the dynamics and trends of American foreign policy.
