Mu Mutian's Translations of Foreign Literature and the Chinese Modern Literature of Translation

Mu Mutian’s literature translations are of great significance for the understanding the Chinese modern literature of translation. The debate on the issue of “translation” between Mu Mutian and Lun Xun was a conflict and clash between different views on translation dating from May Fourth Movement and formulated in the plural constituents of the Left-wing Literature. The debate helped establish the Mu Mutian’s status as a translator, and his translation and interpretation of Balzac are the remarkable achievements of the Left-wing Literature. However, Mu Mutian’s translated works vanished soon from the readers’ sight. This needs to be reinterpreted by combining the tradition of the Chinese modern literature of translation. It also reflects the limitations of his inherent qualities. By contrast, his translation of poetry is more solidified, but it is more suppressed by his innate predominant consciousness.
