The Literary Significance of Code-switching in Ulysses

J. Joyce's Ulysses is praised a rare book, a book of double Dutch. We find in his book the author is fond of using the code-switching which is characteristic of his work. The code-switchings used in Ulysses as we find are of two types: (1) in moving thoughts of the character; (2) in conversation on or talking the character has with himself. Departing from the traditional novel writing, Joyce does not to be an interpreter to explain the character's move of thought, but goes deep into the heart of the character's taking himself as the character in person and making soliloquy to bring the real change of consciousness of what the character's thinking to light. The use of code - switching in Ulysses has played successfully in explaining the leading character Stephen's consciousness and subconsciousness. The code-switching is of significance in providing means for developing literary creation and ways for reading literary works as well.
