On the Poetry of Emily Dickinson

Dickinson is universally acknowledged as one of the forerunners of American modern poetry. She does not stick to the traditional rhyme and rhythm. Her poetry is of extremely free style and astonishing originality. Her understanding of the nature differs from other romantic poets. What she seeks in her nature poems is neither primitiveness nor romanticism of the nature. She thinks that nature is independent of man's will, and that man is, in a sense, absolutely unable to possess the nature. Yet, in Dickinson's eyes, it is difficult to explore the connotation and mystery of the nature, so she turns to man's inner world. She uses concrete or natural objects as imagery to precisely present man's emotional experience in his inner world.
