| Abstract: | Comparison is one of the most common and important kinds of rhetorical devices and of the many different forms of comparison, metaphor is relatively complicated with its various implicit forms. So it is not easy to have a perfect command of it. In this essay in light of the definitions of authoritative scholars, the author analyses the major characteristics and the construction of metaphor, summerizes its categories according to its forms of expression. From the point of teaching practice she also analyses the functions of metaphor. Considering the concrete conditions of the Chinese learners and with her own teaching experience she puts forward some points for attention in the use of metaphor. |
