The Pragmatic Functions of Euphemism

As a linguistic phenomenon,euphemism has been developing with human society for quite a long time.It is an important means by which people use to avoid unintentional offense or displeasure during the course of conversation.this paper,by introducing the communication functions(evasion,disguise,politeness and elegance functions) as well as the status quo of euphemism researches both at home and abroad,analyzes with examples the various forms that embody its pragmatic functions,trying to understand and master the importance of the pragmatic functions of euphemism.
