西部边疆对于美国近现代的社会发展举足轻重。边疆报纸是西部与东部联系的纽带，个人与社区融合的媒介，是边疆人们的精神家园。边疆报纸最初的作用是吸引固定移民，丰富社区生活，促进城镇发展。在争取读者群，吸引广告商的过程中，边疆报业逐渐走向成熟。随着报业商业性的增强和竞争的加剧，报业的边疆痕迹逐渐淡化，西部与东部报业日渐趋同。

An Initiative Analysis on Modern American Journalism on Its Western Frontiers

As the Western frontiers were of great importance for the development of modem American society, journalism there was the tie linking the West and the East, the medium enabling the fusion of the individual with the community, and the very spiritual homestead for the inhabitants there. The initiative role of the frontier newspapers was to solicit mi- gration, to enrich life in the communities, and to accelerate the development of the urban areas. And these newspapers by and by became mature in the process of attracting their readership and advertisers. Finally newspapers in the West and in the East became similar to each other as a result of the sharpening of competition and of their commercialization.
