Satyajit Ray's Serial Female Films and Women in Indian Families

Satyajit Ray,a well-known Indian director,made a series of female films in early 1960s. By depicting the tragic fate of a number of heroines,he raised a vital issue covered up in the women liberation movement since the days of Bengali renaissance:Indian male reformers advocated emulating the West in eternal and material realm with a view to facilitate the country's modernization,yet they insisted on preserving ethical tradition at home. This paper aims at analyzing and evaluating those films.
