Formation of Radicals Adopted in Xu Shen's Origin of Chinese Characters and Its Causes

Radicals, a concept that was formed in making Chinese dictionaries, can be divided into two types: those based on the principle of coining and those based on the principle of indexing, the latter being derived from the former. The derivation has a bearing on the development of the form and structure of Chinese characters. Radicals adopted in Xu Shen's Origin of Chinese Characters are the earliest ones based on the principle of coining, and the study of such radicals is conductive to the understanding and mastery of the causes of the structure of Chinese characters.
