Phobias and related symptoms: Some social sources

Data from samples of undergraduates, adolescents, and simpler societies show phobic symptoms to be correlated with patterns of social organization that both foster and forbid their participants' pursuit of personal and special interests rather than common interests. Some evidence is given showing that the social correlates of phobias are different from those for hysteric and obsessional symptoms.
