中国文学中对乌托邦的叙述始终无法摆脱陶渊明的桃花源传统，从废名的《桥》到阎连科的《受活》都表现出一种向后看的特征，建构的是以桃花源为摹本的乡土乌托邦。本文即以阎连科的《受活》为中心探讨中国文学中的乡土乌托邦传统及其在2l世纪最终幻灭的过程。《受活》在文本叙述形式以及乌托邦理念两个层面都具有自己的独创性，尤其对由残疾人组成的人间天堂的描述更具特异性。“残疾”的题旨因此成为小说中乌托邦理念的重要维度。而《受活》最终则表现出反乌托邦的特征，小说揭示出中国本土的世外桃源、共产主义的乌托邦实践以及商品经济的消费乌托邦诸种形态的纷纷幻灭，展示了中国乡土社会深刻的历史性危机以及当代文化理想和社会理想的阙如状态。
