Abstract: | In this paper I shall provide a self‐reflective account of the development of a psychoanalytic psychotherapy service for the parents and carers of children considered to be at risk of abuse or neglect by social workers or child mental health professionals. I will discuss some of my thinking in setting up such a service and the difficulties, both clinical and operational, that I have encountered. I will draw tentative conclusions about the effectiveness of once‐weekly psychotherapy for parents in protecting their children from harm and promoting their development. I will illustrate the difficulties and my conclusions with clinical material. |
