严复"信、达、雅"新解

长期以来,人们大多把严复的"信、达、雅"作为一种孤立的翻译标准加以研究。这种研究导致了对严复本人及其翻译思想不公正和不客观的评价。综观严复的翻译作品,他本人并未遵守这一标准。根据西方多元系统理论及严复所处的时代背景,"信、达、雅"是严复所采取的翻译策略,其背后隐藏着严复的"别有用心":严复希望当时的知识分子就着"信、达、雅"这件"糖衣",把西学这副"药"吃下去,从而实现其本人的西学救国的理想。

A Re-interpretation of Yan Fu's "Xin, Da, Ya"

Yan Fu's "Xin, Da, Ya" has long been studied as an isolated translation criterion in the Chinese translation circle. This model of studies has led to the misjudgement about Yan Fu himself and his translation theory. This paper attempts to reinterpret "Xin, Da, Ya" in the light of the poly-system theory. "Xin, Da, Ya" is a translational strategy adopted by Yan Fu to fight against the society in which he lived. Yan Fu borrowed "Xin, Da, Ya," the conventional standard of Chinese writing, and used it as the standard of translation. His real intention was to introduce the western academy to China in the disguise of "Xin, Da, Ya".
