Abstract:In-depth interviewing and participant observation were used to study how social workers influence birth mothers in the pregnancy counseling process. According to the workers (1) they have little or no influence over a birth mother's decision to keep or relinquish her baby and (2) the decision to keep or relinquish is largely dependent on the birth mother's emotional capacity to tolerate the loss of the child.
