清末四川庙产兴学过程中,作为庙会公产资源之一的庙树,在各地都曾被砍伐,以为修缮、营造学堂之用,或筹作学堂运作经费。在不同的地区,砍伐庙树的目的和特点有所不同。同时,砍伐庙树过程中存在弊混谋利的情况,引起了大量的冲突和诉讼,反映出清季推行现代化过程中国家与民众及民众团体在传统的习惯、仪式和信仰问题上常发生的对抗。对这一问题的考察,可增加我们对晚清地方学务运作过程和近代乡村社会文化变迁的了解。

Sichuan's Promotion of Education with Income from the Buddhist Temple's Property in Cutting Trees on the Ground of the Temple in Late Qing

The promotion of education with the income from the Buddhist temple's property is an educational movement in late Qing period which was characterized with people all over Sichuan province cutting trees on the ground of temples and other religious sites,Buddhist or otherwise,and the purpose of which was allegedly to fund the repairing,the building and the running of schools.The drive to cut trees in different areas varied in characteristics and intentions behind.Meanwhile,such fever gave rise to evil practices of selfishly running after profits which in turn caused lots of conflicts and lawsuits and,therefore,served to reflect the confrontations between the government and the people as well as local communities in tradition,ritual and belief.The thesis is an effort to look into the cutting of trees on the temple ground so as to add to the knowledge of the promotion of education in provinces in the late Qing period and of the social and cultural changes taking place in rural communities in modern times.
