An Analysis of the Image-Literary Intertextuality Between the Remnant Complex and Literati's Orchid Poetry and Painting Tradition

Orchid was frequently used in ancient Chinese poems and paintings as literary image and cultural symbol. Since the Song Dynasty, orchid has become an important subject for literati painting, and a large number of poems have been produced accordingly. Especially for those painters who survived from former dynasties and frustrated literati, orchids have become one of the typical carriers to write about themselves, soothe trauma, and place cultural feelings beyond the real politics. They have created a series of literary motifs, image patterns, and ideological structures around orchids. In addition to the traditional text-based expressions, they have created another new system centering on images, pushing the tradition of ideological and emotional expression and the meaning reproduction mechanism in Confucius''s "secluded orchid in a deserted valley" and Qu Yuan''s "beauty of perfumed grass" to a new stage. Therefore, through specific orchid poems and paintings and from the perspective of image-literary intertextuality, we can sort out and interpret these systems of aesthetics, thoughts, and meanings, and explore the complicated legacy, Confucian ideals, and transcendental spirits in those works. It is a path into the spiritual and historical world of Chinese ancient literati.
