由于现代自传转向表现传主的心理真实并注重解释,传统的时间因此遭遇了新的艺术处理.萨特的<词语>以词语为核心来组合童年事件,线性时间遭到漠视.伍尔芙的<存在的瞬间>将现在与过去交织成一幅特殊的时间图案,在复制过去的同时,借助现在加深了对过去的了解,并使自传写作成为写作者当下的安慰.纳博科夫的<说吧,记忆>则彻底取消了时间,众多的生活碎片在想象的坩埚里融化成非时间的情境或观念,构成交响乐般的叙事效果.他们对时间的重组增加了传记这一特殊文类的文学性.

Time and the Narrative Strategy of Modern Autobiography

The traditional linear time is artistically handled in modem autobiographies when they turn to the explo- ration of the psychological reality of the hem with emphasis on interpretation. In Les Mots, S. P. Satre weaves his childhood stories around words with linear time ignored. In Moments of Being by V. Woolf, the past and the present are interwoven into a temporal pattern in which the understanding of the past is deepened with the aid of the present while the past is beng copied. The writing of autobiography becomes a consolation to the autobiographer for the present. In Speak, Memory, Nabokov totally removes time and multitudinous fragments of life are melted in the furnace of imagination into non-time situations and concepts producing a narrative effect of symphony. By regrouping of time they have improved the literariness of this particular genre-biography.
