劳动力市场发育、产权改革与中国森林资源退化

Labor Market Development, Land Tenure Reform and Deforestation in China

This paper analyzes the factors which have potential effects on managed and natural forest, and test the hypothesis that market development and insecurity of property rights have significant effects on deforestation. Empirical analysis shows that the development of labor market has a positive effect on managed forest, but has no significant effect on the natural forest. Economic growth and per capita income increase have a more complicated effect on forest development rather than a simple linear effect, which shows the evidence of existence of “Environmental Kutznetz Curve”. Results from the most reasonable model considering endogeneity of property rights show that the process of reform is determined by the interest of government, and the current property rights regime is one of the most crucial factors affecting deforestation in China.
