黄老之学实质是老子哲学与秦朝法家的结合,其基本原则是既要维护中央集权的有效统治,又要兼顾农民利益。代表黄老之学思想特色的“无为而治”,符合汉初轻徭薄赋、与民休息的社会主旋律,故得到上自中央政府、下及地方官吏的共同贯彻。随着汉代经济的复苏,黄老无为精神为儒家的“刚健进取”所替代,黄老之学与老子哲学重复之处自然消亡,但黄老之学的某些部分却被其他更有力的学派所吸收。黄老学派的寿命短暂,黄老思想的效应则长久。

The doctrine of the Yellow Emperor-Laozi School is essentially an integration of Laozi's philosophy and the Qin-Dynasty Legalists' views,and its basic principle is that centralism should be efficiently practiced while protecting the interests of the presents."Administration with inaction",which represents the essentials of the doctrine of the Yellow Emperor-Laozi School,goes in line with the social theme of the early Han Dynasty,which is characterized by less corvee and taxation as well as relaxation of the people.Therefore,such a policy has been well implemented by not only the central government but also the local low-ranking officials.With the economic revival of the Han Dynasty,the part of!the Yellow Emperor-Laozi School's doctrine which overlaps with that of the Laozi's philosophy died out,and the Yellow EmperorLaozi School's spirit of inaction is superceded by the Confucianists' ideas of "powerfulness and progressiveness".But some other parts of the Yellow Emperor-Laozi School's doctrine have been accepted by other stronger schools.Although the lifespan of the Yellow Emperor-Laozi School short,the influence of its doctrines is perpetual.
