Debate on the Issue of ‘Social Work as Profession'

The paper maintains that the rationale of social work profession rests on its system of knowledge and occupational norms, and it further outlines three major professional areas of social work practice. The principle of self-determination highlighted in the Western literatures is also regarded in this paper that clarifies its contexts and implications, and in the end, the paper copes with some misconceptions which appeared in the Chinese social work researches. The purpose of this paper is surely not to argue the necessity, or to underline its importation, of raising the degree of professionalization for Chinese social work, but to bring readers a deeper insight into the nature of social work and of this profession through the discussion.
