Observation of Hofmannsthai's Early Poetics from His Speech "Poetry and Life"

In the essay "Poetry and Life," the young Hofmannsthal expounds systematically his poetics of formalist tendencies. He thinks that the effect of poetry does not originate from material, but from form, and the form ranks above the content. But in the meantime he opposes the aestheticism, which is divorced from the life, and he advocates the combination of art and life, as well as the unity of form and content. He considers mimesis as copy of reality and uncreative, maintains the introversion of the literature, and stands for the lyric of the inner world.
