On the Image of "River" in Classical Chinese Poetry

Image is defined as the objective reflection blended with the subjective feelings. As a common objective reflection, the "river" contains profound meanings of life and cultural connotations by the poets throughout the ages. The article aims to analyze the image of "river" in three aspects. In classical Chinese poetry, the image of a long "river" with a distant source represents the worship of national culture and the sorrow of parting; a flowing "river" to the east manifests the magnificent nature and the regret: for the past time; and a raging or a clear "river" symbolizes the turbulent society or the pure and peaceable mind.
