市民社会是现代性确立的重要标志和现代性个体主体性原则的重要体现。但在资本主义条件下,市民社会受资本逻辑的支配,成为私人利益的战场,从而使得现代性走向了自我悖反;市民社会中公共领域的诞生揭示了现代性自我救赎的希望;公共领域追寻公共性,是国家与市民社会之间以及市民社会内部的利益个体之间通过自由沟通以形成理解、或通过商谈以达成妥协的机制或制度化渠道。公共领域可以调节国家与社会的关系,成为资本主义条件下现代性自我救赎的希望。
