Orientation and Conflict: Zhao Shuli and the Contemporary Literary Criteria

Zhao Shuli was set up as a typical example of literary creation in the Liberated Area because of his ideological orientation. This orientation means the establishment of a certain literary criterion, which initiated a standardization of contemporary Chinese literature. After the founding of the People''s Republic of China in 1949, the writers with their changed identity became new workers of literature under the new political system. The changing criticism of Zhao Shuli after 1949 reveals the conflicts between him and the contemporary literary criteria, whose nature represents the contradiction and conflicts between the identity of an artist and that of a farmer writer.
