The Soviet-German War and the Japan-Soviet Relations

The evolution of Japan Soviet relations during the Second World War is closely linked with the Soviet German war. Before the outbreak of the Soviet German war, the Soviet Union and Japan had, in fact, improved their relations by signing peaceful treaty, because the Soviet Union desired the avoidance of two great wars and needed to concentrate on the coming war in the west while Japan intended not to involve itself into the possible Soviet German war so to ensure its advancement into the south. The development of the Soviet German war disrupted the original plan of Japan to advance into the north when the opportunity came and the relationship between the Soviet Union and Japan was shaken and yet not destroyed completely. The decisive turn of the Soviet German war resulted in the diplomatic passivity of Japan in the Japan Soviet relationship and created favorable preconditions for the Soviet Union's participation in the war against Japan.
