| Abstract: | A contrastive analysis of the Politeness Principle and of politeness strategies in some specific speech acts between English and Chinese is presented with emphasis on cultural differences. The study aims to help English learners use appropriate and polite expressions and avoid pragmatic failures in cross cultural communications so as to guarantee the smooth achievement of communicative purposes. |
