The Paradoxical Situation of New Historicist Trend of Thought in Literature and Art

New Historicism, as a trend of thought in literature and art, rose abruptly on the horizon of Chinese literature in the late 1980s, challenging all kinds of formalisms and traditional historicism. Being a powerful trend, it digs into the deep layer of history and culture to pursue the essence of literature. However, when it is examined comprehensively, it hasn't extricated itself from the following paradoxical situation: it returns to history and then sinks into history; it subverts the History and then falls into the relativism of histories; it emphasizes the psychological and emotional contents of history and then heads for historical agnosticism; it desperately clings to the marginal ideology and then gets lost in it. At present, it is a pressing task for the New Historicism to break away from the dilemma.
