论六朝时期岭南的佛教及其与官僚士商的关系

本文从岭南高僧、官僚士人及商人三个群体入手，简略考察了六朝时期佛教在岭南传播的情况。笔者认为，六朝时期岭南的高僧有着流动频繁、重译经创寺而不重佛教义理探讨的特点；岭南的官僚文人热心佛教的较少，而岭南商人则由于在从事海外贸易的过程中，最早接触佛教，对佛教在岭南的传播与发展起了重要的推动作用。但商人阶层信奉佛教，主要出于功利目的。出现这些现象的原因在于，当时岭南经济文化比较落后，不是南方政治、经济、文化中心，加上岭南地区传统的务实精神的影响，使涉足岭南的中外高僧难以长久停留，也使佛教在岭南地区难以向上流社会推进。

On Buddhism in the South of the Five Ridges during the Six Dynasties: Its Relation with Bureaucracy, Intelligentsia and Merchants

Starting with the three social groups of people: eminent monks, bureaucracyintelligentsia and merchants, the author studies the spreading of Buddhism across the South of the Five Ridges during the period of Six Dynasties(220-589 A.D.). The author thinks that the activities of the monks in that area of the time were characterized by frequent migration, negligence of study on Buddhist doctrine while the founding of temples and translation of Buddhist sutras were given priority. Few of the bureaucrats and intellectuals showed interest in Buddhism but the merchants in the area played an important role in promoting Buddhism because they, in the first place, got to know and believed in Buddhism in foreign trade affairs, for the sake of material gains, though. This phenomenon could be attributable to the underdeveloped economy, non-central geographical disadvantage and the influence of traditional pragmatism. That made it impossible for the visiting eminent monks to stay long in the area, and equally impossible for the area to develope into one part of the upper-class society.
