夏洛克形象的悲剧性探析

Reread Shylock from a Tragic Viewpoint

Traditionally Shylock was viewed as an unsympathetic usurer and miner on the stage. Looking over the literary devices adopted in this play and the social and religious peculiarities of the time, the author analyzed The Merchant of Venice as a tragedy and viewed Shylock as a victim of racial prejudice who suffered a lot from religious persecution. This thesis leads to a conclusion that differs from the traditional one and puts forward a different image of Shylock-a tragic hero of his "scared race" the Jews.
