On Liang Qichao's Attitude towards the West during the Reform Movement of 1898

Taking which attitude towards the West is an important but knotty problem in the modernization of China. In the reform movement of 1898, Liang Qichao held that Chinese in the early stage of modern times should integrate positively with the world. He thought that Chinese should learn advanced things in the West on the basis of national conditions. On the other hand, Chinese should see clearly the inequality of the political and economic systems of the globe, and the aggressive nature of modern Westerners, so Chinese should maintain sharp vigilance.
