On the Connotation and History of Humor Novel as an Aesthetic Term

This paper analyses the cultural context, developing process and artistic function of humor as an aesthetic category in modern times, and points out that the rational spirit and the sceptical attitude reflect the cultural ideas of modern mankind. With the aid of an explanation on the ideas on humor novels of Milan Kundera (1929- ), the author delineates the great history of humor novel in the last four centuries especially its tragic lot in the cultural context of the 20th century. The author believes that in the new century, humor not only should be a main aesthetic style of novel, but also could become an expressive contemporary aesthetic symbol because of its novelistic wisdom and relativity position related with humor novel.
