Christian Ideas of Takeo Arisima

Takeo arisima, one of the representatives of the Birch School in modern Japanese literature, was a "conscionable humanistic writer". He became a Christian to probe the mystery of life, but drifted away from the church after he had gained a deeper knowledge of society and religion. Christian ideas such as sin and punishment, however, were adopted as the motifs of his works, revealing the influence of Christian culture upon him. He depicted in his works the conflict between man's pursuit of freedom and equality in modern society and the Christian ideas of sin and punishment, and posed the problems of man's salvation and self-preservation.
