中国改革开放的历程也是中国社会现代性成长的过程。中国社会现代性成长体现在经济、政治、文化、社会与人五个大的层面,呈现出由被动到主动、由单一到全面、由感性到理性、由量的积累到质的提升等阶段性特点。中国社会现代性成长存在着成长的不均衡性、三农现代性成长严重滞后、政治体系应对压力的适应能力差、可持续性发展存在的问题突出、对外部世界的依赖性过高、与现代性社会相适应的现代文化还没有完全形成等问题。
