从“最贴近的自然对等”看“君子”和“小人”的英译

《论语》作为一部儒家经典,不仅对中国的思维方式和文化产生了深远影响,而且对其进行直接英译或对其内容诠释已成为近年来诸多学者对中国典籍青睐的一种时尚。因局限于译者视角或理解的断章取义,致使其对同一名词翻译也不尽相同。本着英文翻译理念——“最贴近的自然对等”,并参据词汇对等,选取了《论语》中两个十分具有文化内涵的“君子”和“小人”进行分析,梳理了两者的英译现状,同时指出了某些翻译的不足并尝试给出更合适的英译。

On the English Translation of "Gentleman" and "Villain" From"the Closest Natural Equivalence"

As a Confucian classic, The Analects of Confucius not only produced far-reaching influence on theChinese way of thinking and culture, but also has become a fashion for many scholars who try to translate it intoEnglish or interpret it in recent years. Due to different perspectives of the translators or misunderstanding of thecontent, the same terms are translated differently. On the basis of the English translation concept: "the closestnatural equivalence" and according to the lexical equivalence, this paper analyzes the translations of "gentleman"and "villain" which have rich cultural connotations in the Analects of Confucius, presenting the current translationsof these two words, pointing out some problems and trying to give a more appropriate translation.
